Shovelling snow while it's still snowing: Workers at Heathrow try to clear the snow after all flights at the airport were grounded over the weekend

Millions of Christmas travellers remained stranded last night, fully 36 hours after heavy snowfall crippled the country.

Much of the transport network was paralysed – threatening to ruin the festive period for millions of families.

Furious airline passengers launched blistering attacks on beleaguered transport officials for effectively closing Heathrow airport, creating a backlog which could last until the next expected dumping of snow on Thursday.

Misery at the departure gate

It emerged yesterday that British Airways called off hundreds of flights from Heathrow because it could not de-ice enough of its planes in time. While rival airlines continued to take off over the weekend, BA said it had cancelled flights from Friday onwards to give passengers ‘certainty’.

However, insiders claimed the truth was that the airline had been caught short by the weather, with too few staff available to tackle its frozen airliners.

Sources suggested the company was paying the price of poor labour relations. Employees were ‘getting their revenge’ by doing the minimum necessary.

Thousands of passengers were left furious with one describing ‘Third World’ conditions at Heathrow’s Terminal Five, from which all BA flights now depart.

The most serious problems were at Heathrow and Gatwick, where many travellers were forced to spend a second night sleeping on the floors and in corridors. Drunken fights broke out at Heathrow as all flights into the airport were cancelled and only seven were allowed out.

The airport’s management warned passengers to expect ‘lots of knock-on disruption and delays’ which will continue for days in the run-up to Christmas.

The backlog might not even be cleared before the next bout of snow, forecast for Thursday.

One senior aviation insider told the Daily Mail: ‘BA’s de-icing system went totally wrong on Friday. They didn’t have crews in place.’

Heathrow's Terminal 3 became a huge dormitory with passengers forced to sleep where they could find floor space

Airport officials confirmed that Heathrow is responsible for de-icing the runway and plane parking slots, known as stands. But it is down to each individual airline to de-ice its own planes.

British Airways chief executive Willie Walsh and BAA boss Colin Matthews were in constant touch throughout the saga, but British Airways declined to comment on allegations of heated rows between the two. A BA spokesman said: ‘They speak all the time. Their conversations are confidential.’

Success: Matt Cardle, seen out in London last night, has achieved the Christmas number one

X Factor winner Matt Cardle has clinched the Christmas Number One with his debut single When We Collide.

The 27-year-old singer's cover of Biffy Clyro's track sold 439,000 copies in six days, and beat stars including Rihanna to the coveted top spot.

After finding out he had achieved the Christmas number one, Matt said: 'I can't believe it. As if winning wasn't enough. I honestly didn't think I'd even make it on to the live shows, let alone win and now be the Christmas number one.

'I can't even begin to describe how if feels. It's nuts, crackers and crazy. To think that many people have supported me and bought the record is absolutely mind blowing.'

There have been various internet campaigns to stop Matt getting to number one, including a re-release of the original track from Biffy Clyro, called Many Of Horror.
However, the track only charted at number eight.

Other attempts came from The Trashmen, who reached number three with their novelty track Surfing Bird, and anti-X Factor project Cage Against The Machine.

Matt, who beat Rebecca Ferguson to be crowned the winner of The X Factor earlier this month, told fans on Twitter he was incredibly excited about finding out the chart results, tweeting: 'Off to capital radio. . ! So exited. . May be a little bit of wee. . :) xx'

Official Charts Company managing director Martin Talbot described Matt's sales figures as 'a truly impressive achievement'.

He said: 'Besides being a record for a non-charity single this year, it might even have been higher given the freezing conditions which have gripped the UK in the past couple of days and which have kept many consumers off the high streets.'

All alone: Vanessa Hudgens celebrates her 22nd birthday at Pure in Las Vegas

Luckily the singer and actress wasn't all alone - she was joined by her best friends Ashley Tisdale and Brittany Snow who joined Vanessa inside the club for the party.

Just last month she was hugging and kissing her boyfriend of four years, Zac Efron, as they waited for their car outside a hotel in Los Angeles.

But last night Vanessa Hudgens walked the red carpet alone at her own birthday party just a week after announcing their split.

The High School Musical star was at Pure Nightclub in Caesar's Palace Hotel and Casino to celebrate turning 22.

Not fazed: The actress did not seem to be bothered by her recent split from Zac Efron

Vanessa looked stunning in a tight-fitting silver strapless bandeau dress and black high heels.

Inside the girls sat at a table in the VIP area and later in the night Vanessa was spotted dancing on a couch.

She was then presented with a huge, three tiered floral birthday cake with which she posed for pictures before security drew curtains around the group so they could enjoy some more privacy.

The ladies partied into the early hours before retiring to their hotel room.
Earlier in the day Vanessa was spotted preparing for her Las Vegas trip by running a few errands near her home in Studio City, California.

Stolen kisses: Kara Tointon and Artem Chigvintsev kiss after being crowned the winners of Strictly Come Dancing 2010

They have been caught spending the night at each others houses and set tongues wagging with their obvious chemistry on the dance floor.

And after taking the crown last night, Strictly Come Dancing 2010 winners Kara Tointon and Artem Chigvintsev appeared to confirm the romance their fans have been hoping for.

While celebrating their win last night, the excitement appeared to get the better of Artem, who dropped his guard and planted a kiss on his 27-year-old dance partner.

Winner: Kara Tointon and dance partner Artem Chigvintsev were tonight voted the winners of Strictly Come Dancing 2010

The pair have hinted at their affection for each other, but have remained coy on whether they are an item throughout the series.

Last night Kara said that now that the competition is over, they can concentrate on the future.

'Fingers crossed,' she said. 'We will see what happens.'

'We get on brilliantly and it will be nice to do normal things like go to the cinema or for a meal because we spend all our time in the studio.'

But the former EastEnders star won't be venturing too far for a little while, after it emerged she was taken to A&E this morning for an arm injury suffered during training.

Emotional: Kara, who recovering at home today with a wrist injury, spoke of her affection for partner Artem after winning

Kara was forced to dance through the pain last night to victory, but after the show she was whisked to hospital where it was revealed she had torn ligaments in her lower arm.

She is now recovering at her parents' house in North London with her arm in a sling, giving 28-year-old Artem the opportunity to take care of her.

'I think we are going to literally not go anywhere today. It'll be quite nice,' she said this morning.

'He's going to cook for me in my mum and dad's kitchen. They've met him and they all get on so well.'

And it seems Artem's family feel the same about Miss Tointon.

In an interview with the News of the World, his mother Anna spoke of her happiness about her son's new love interest.

Speaking from their home in Izhevsk, Mrs Chigvintsev, 60, said of Kara, who she has not yet met: 'She looks really great. They make a beautiful couple which fills my heart with pride and joy.

'I respect my son's choice. He's very fond of her, and she seems to like him too.'

The tension mounts: Kara and Artem and Matt and Aliona wait to find out who has won the competition

'I have made the most wonderful friend for life and this has been the most special experience of my life.

He returned the compliment, adding: 'Thank you, Kara, you're amazing.'

When she found out she and Artem had won, the former EastEnders star burst into tears before hugging Matt Baker and Aliona Vilani.

Despite falling at the final hurdle, finalist Matt said he was thrilled with the result, saying: 'It's been graet. I have absolutely thoroughly enjoyed tonight, and Kara and Artem are worthy winners. If I was at home, I would be voting for Kara as well.'

Emotional: David Beckham struggled to contain his emotions as he collected the Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony in Birmingham

Victoria Beckham was reduced to tears last night as her husband David was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at BBC's Sports Personality of the Year.

The former Spice Girl struggled to contain herself as she sat with the couple's three sons Brooklyn, 11, Romeo, eight and four-year-old Cruz and Beckham's mother Sandra.

A clearly emotional Beckham also found it difficult not to cry as he thanked Victoria and their sons for their support over the years.

He said: 'Of course, I want to thank my wife and my children. Not only has she given me three amazing boys but the support she's given me and she is truly and inspiration for me every single day. So Victoria, Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz - thank you.'

Teary: David's wife Victoria was reduced to tears when David took to the stage to collect his prize

In the audience, a teary Victoria wiped her eyes as she watched her husband accept the prize along with her sons.

While Lineker gave Beckham, 35, a couple of seconds to recover, Sir Bobby said: 'I would just like to say congratulations to David. He is a very very pleasant person and a good man and he deserves everything that has been said of him tonight.

Humbled: David's eyes glistened as he was welcomed to the stage by an embarrassingly long standing ovation

'He's also never afraid to say his opinions on everything so I think I should pass it across to him now.'

Beckham then continued: 'I'm obviously really humbled because to receive an award for something I love doing and have always loved doing is amazing. To receive it from Sir Bobby Charlton, I am truly honoured.

Family support: Victoria sat with her and David's three sons as well as David's mother Sandra

'Football is a team game and without the teams and the players' support I have had over the years, I wouldn't be here today. I wouldn't be here without the skill and support of those players.

'I've been lucky enough to play with some of the great teams over the years. Playing for England has been one of the highlights and biggest things of my career.

'I've been able to play under some of the best coaches in my career and obviously for me the best manager in football who I regard as a father figure still after so many years of knowing him - Sir Alex Ferguson.

'I'm sorry that I'm going on, but I really have to thank my parents, who have sacrificed so much over the years.

Inspiration: David called Victoria his 'inspiration every day' as he thanked people for the award

He spent a decade at Manchester United, lifting nine major trophies with the club before moving to Real Madrid in 2003.

The father-of-three was also a key member of the England 2018 World Cup bid, which lost out to Russia in the vote earlier in December.

Beckham is England's most capped outfield player and won six Premier League titles and the Champions League with Manchester United. In 2001 Beckham was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

He currently plays professional football for American team Los Angeles Galaxy.
