Hitting the right note: Cheryl Cole performed live twice for her appearance on Alan Carr's Chatty Man, which was screened on Channel 4 last night

She caused controversy after miming for two years running on the X Factor.

But last night, Cheryl Cole gave her vocal chords some exercise - with two live acoustic performances as she made an appearance on Alan Carr's show, Chatty Man.

The 27-year-old star began with a pared down rendition of her No.1 single Promise This, which she performed this year on the X Factor.

Looking good: She started with a acoustic version of Promise This, left, wearing a black cut away dress split to the thigh and, right, singing her new song The Flood in a white gown

She was heavily criticised at the time, after it appeared she was lip-syncing large sections of the track during the high-energy dance routine.

It also emerged that the performance was pre-recorded, with X Factor chiefs saying it would have been logistically problematic to have done it live within the show.
This time round, however, Cheryl was clearly singing every word as she stood centre stage in a stunning cutaway black dress.

Feeling festive: The X Factor judge said she was looking forward to spending some time off this Christmas

After being interviewed by Carr, she then finished off with another live performance of her new track, The Flood.

Having earlier changed into a stunning white gown, the Girls Aloud star was accompanied by a couple of backing singers who helped her hit the high notes during the chorus.

The interview itself was punctuated with a series or awkward moments, when Cheryl was subjected to Carr's crude questioning style.

Taken aback: Cheryl was full of laughter and shock as she was subjected to Carr's crude questioning style

That's got a good kick: The host gave the star her favourite drink to sip on during the interview, a Martini with passion fruit

The singer is planning to spend some time out over the festive season, saying Christmas is her favourite time of the year.

'I'll be taking some time out with my doggies, [spending some time with the] family, [eating] Christmas pudding and turkey sandwiches,' she said.

In 2009, Cheryl was criticised for seemingly miming huge chunks of Fight For This Love which she performed on the X Factor.

Oh dear! Cheryl came over all bashful and embarrassed when Carr questioned her about the sexual chemistry between herself and Simon Cowell

Scene setter: Part of the Malcolm Forbes toy collection which has been on display for the past 25 years in the lobby of the Forbes Magazine headquarters in New York

A collection of toys amassed over almost 40 years by the publishing tycoon Malcolm Forbes and his sons sold for $2.3million (£1.4million) at auction in New York.

It included toy boats, soldiers, motorcycles and board games.

One of the most expensive items sold was a 3ft-long replica of the 1915 ocean liner Lusitania, which was sold for $194,500 - a record amount for a toy boat.

Expensive gifts: The Forbes collection of miniature antique toy boats, luxury ships, soldiers, cowboys and American Indians, and games brought $2.3million at auction

Forbes had paid $28,600 for the Lusitania at Sotheby's in 1983.

Also drawing interest from several bidders was an Exotic Clockwork Gunboat Attributed to Märklin /Rock and Graner which achieved $134,500.

Another major highlight from today’s sale was an original Monopoly game-set of circular design, handmade by Charles Darrow, probably in 1933, and handed down his family.

On guard: A medieval mounted knight was one of the many lots in the Forbes auction

The game set sold for $146,500, well-above the $80,000 high estimate.

It is the earliest Darrow set known to survive, the only one of circular shape, and the earliest to include the rules.

Two rare sets of finely detailed medieval knights made in the 1930s sold for $15,000.
Some of the most valuable pieces date back to what collectors call the 'golden age' of toy making, from the 1850s until after the First World War.

Forbes, who died aged 71 in 1990, was the founder of Forbes business magazine and was a close friend of actress Elizabeth Taylor.

The collection had been expected to sell for up to $5 million.

Round the board: A highlight of the sale was a circular Monopoly set (circa 1933), which reached $146,500

Va va vroom: Also included was a large collection of vintage motor toys, which sold for $15,000

Record-breaker ahoy: One of the most expensive items sold was a 3ft-long replica of the 1915 ocean liner Lusitania, which was sold for $194,500 - a record amount for a toy boat

For his 70th birthday, he threw himself a $2.5million party in Morocco.

He only seriously started collecting toys when his children had grown up, buying an antique boat at FAO Schwartz during the 1970s.

Many of the early editions of Monopoly - a popular game in the Forbes household - were purchased by his sons, partly in homage to their father's love of capitalism.

Playing politics: Malcolm Forbes and his family meet President Eisenhower in 1957. Forbes ran for the candidacy of governor of New Jersey before devoting himself to Forbes magazine

Winners: Seabank Road in the Wirral was granted the Perfect Christmas by Sainsbury's

Could this be the only place in Britain that needs to have snow shipped in to make it a perfect Christmas?

After a weekend of heavy blizzards snow now covers most of the UK - but Merseyside has dodged much of the bad weather.

So when one lucky street in the Wirral won a Winter Wonderland experience from Sainsbury's the supermarket giant had to ship in fake snow to create the festive scene - and for once residents were pleased the council had not sent the gritters in.

Elves at work: The supermarket chain's staff showered the street with snow on Saturday

But even in Seabank Road, which was selected out of more than 45,000 applicants, the weather almost stopped the supermarket chain’s elves from decorating.

‘Despite the efforts of the British weather, we've delivered the perfect Christmas to one lucky street in the country,’ Sainsbury's Director of Brand Communications, Claire Harrison-Church, said.

‘Congratulations to a very deserving family at Seabank Road and their neighbours.’

Seabank Road were also gifted other treats from Sainsbury’s.

All the houses on the road were decorated, a 25ft Christmas tree was erected, there was a screening of the Snowman, and carols were sung by a choir.

Merry: Sainsbury's also provided food and drink for the partying over the weekend

Explosive: The evening's entertainment, which included a choir singing carols (right) was ended by an impressive firework display

Also, there were animals – donkeys and reindeer – and, of course, a plentiful spread of tasty Christmas food and drink from Sainsbury's.

The residents partied in the snow on Saturday until late into the night, before the festive event was brought to a close with a spectacular firework display.

A whole team of Sainsbury's elves had started work on the transformation early on Friday, and residents Carol and Rick Austin said: ‘This really has made our Christmas.

‘We have had a trying year as a family but the love and kindness we've received from our neighbours in Seabank Road and the wider community has been a great help.

‘Words can't express how grateful we are to all of them, so this perfect Christmas is a wonderful way for us to say thank you to them, we hope they've enjoyed it as much as we have.’

Festive: The residents all had their houses and gardens decorated by Sainsbury's, after being picked out of 45,000 applicants

Dressed up: Children got into the swing of things and were given Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer noses and antlers to celebrate

Their daughter, Sophie, said: ‘My sister Mia has spent the last 13 months in hospital after suffering a stroke at the age of 21 that left her unable to speak or move.

‘We desperately wanted to win so that she could come back to a wonderful surprise and help us in thanking all our friends and neighbours for their help and support.

‘Our special thanks also go to the wonderful nurses at The Wirral Neurological Rehabilitation Unit, Clatterbridge, Mia’s old work colleagues and her boyfriend Rich.
‘We hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas, now that Mia’s home we know we will.’

Sainsbury's Perfect Christmas competition was launched via a national advertising campaign in November and received over 45,000 entries from streets, roads, lanes and mews across the UK.

Mrs Harrison-Church added: ‘We'd also like to extend our thanks to all entrants for getting involved in the competition in their thousands and take this chance to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas.’
