Granny chic: An expressionless Britney Spears pictured out and about in Los Angeles yesterday in an unflattering grey cardigan and sporting scraggly hair

She showed some potential in the wardrobe department last week.

But just days after looking groomed and polished, Britney Spears has taken several sartorial steps backwards and reverted to her customary scruffy style.

The singer was photographed yesterday wearing an unflattering cardigan over a checked shirt with her scraped back hair reveal her scraggly hair extensions.

Looking tired: She was pictured carrying her younger son Jayden James as she chatted on the phone

With her expressionless face, the singer looked somewhat down in the dumps - which is surprising as she is no doubt destined for yet another No.1 single.

The 29-year-old star releases her comeback track - Hold It Against Me - tomorrow (January 11) to U.S. iTunes stores.

UK fans, however, will have to wait until February 20 to purchase the thumping dance tune.

Casual: Mummy duty: On Saturday the star was pictured with son Sean Preston attending a children's birthday party

Give us a smile: Brit, whose new single is officially released in the U.S. tomorrow, wore a striped top and jacket teamed with jeans and brown boots

But in the meantime, the final cut of the song - produced by Dr. Luke and Max Martin - leaked online this morning and was also played for the first time on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS Fm radio show in Los Angeles.

True to Brit's style, there is a poppy chorus, suggestive lyrics and the song even features some trance-style beats, ensuring it will be a club favourite this summer.

An unfinished demo of the track was leaked on the Web last week, although Britney quickly took to Twitter to warn fans to expect something even better.

Cute: Sean Preston slurps on an iced drink as he heads in to the party

Groomed: Britney pictured on Friday looking polished as she left a nail salon

'Heard an early demo of my new single leaked. If u think that's good, wait til you hear the real one Tuesday,' she tweeted.

Dr. Luke later added: 'That version of hold it against me is really really old. It don’t sound like that anymore… it’s WAY better.'

Luke recently revealed that he wanted the sound of the new album to 'get harder' and 'maybe a little more deep into electronic – grimier.'

The song, from her upcoming album, is described as 'an upbeat, dance/pop tune with a pulsating beat.'

The new single will be the first from the singer since her last hugely successful album Circus, released in December 2008.

It became one of the fastest-selling albums of the year and sold four million copies worldwide.

Earlier this month, Britney also announced via Twitter that the new full album will be released in March 2011.

All smiles: Leighton Meester pictured on the set of Gossip Girl in New York today

If Leighton Meester was feeling disappointed that her new movie failed to set the box office alight, then she certainly didn't show it.

The 24-year-old actress was spotted on location filming Gossip Girl today with a huge grin on her face - despite Country Strong flopping over the weekend.

The country music drama didn't even make it into the top five, settling instead for sixth place in its opening weekend and taking $7.3m.

Shopping spree: The actress was filming scenes for the popular U.S. TV show but her film Country Strong failed to set the box office alight this weekend

Considering the cast is headed up by Hollywood A-lister Gwyneth Paltrow, it is a disappointing performance.

The drama is centred on a rising country-music songwriter (Garrett Hedlund) who sparks with a fallen star (Paltrow).

Together, they mount his ascent and her comeback, which leads to romantic complications involving her husband/manager (Tim McGraw) and a beauty queen-turned-singer (Meester).

In comparison True Grit seized the reins with $15 million, taking the No. 1 spot and becoming the first Western to top the $100 million mark since the 1990s, according to studio estimates released on Sunday.

The Paramount release starring Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon bumped off Robert De Niro and Ben Stillers comedy Little Fockers, which was No. 1 for the previous two weekends.

Released by Universal, Little Fockers slipped to second with $13.8 million, raising its total to $124 million.

True Grit, which was directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, lifted its total to $110.4 million.

Among newcomers, Nicolas Cages supernatural thriller Season of the Witch opened at No. 3 with $10.7 million. Distributed by Relativity Media, the movie stars Cage as a knight in the Middle Ages escorting a suspected witch to her trial.

True Grit is a new take on Charles Portis novel, previously adapted in a 1969 version that earned John Wayne an Academy Award.

Bridges stars as lawman Rooster Cogburn, hired by a 14-year-old girl to track down her fathers killer.

In Waynes day, Westerns were a fixture in Hollywood, but the genre fell out of favour over the last 40 years.

I've beat cancer: Michael Douglas spoke to Matt Lauer in his first interview since finishing cancer treatment on NBC's Today show which will air on Tuesday

Five months after revealing he was battling throat cancer and Michael Douglas says he is confident he has beat the illness.

Speaking in his first interview since finishing chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment, the veteran actor, 66, said his tumour has now vanished.

'The odds are, with the tumour gone and what I know about this particular type of cancer, that I've got it beat,' Douglas tells Matt Lauer in an interview on NBC's Today show, which airs in the U.S. on Tuesday.

Life-changing: The veteran actor said the illness had made him think more carefully about how to use his time

Doctors have warned the Wall Street star that he shouldn’t be too quick to dismiss concerns that the cancer could return.

But while he still has to undergo monthly checks, Douglas and wife Catherine Zeta Jones are said to be ‘absolutely delighted’ at the news.

The Oscar-winning actor, who was given just a 50-/50 chance of surviving the stage four cancer when it was first diagnosed four months ago, is already looking forward to making the most of the rest of his life.

‘It's put a timeline on my life,' he said.

‘I'm 66 now. You know, I'm fortunate I've got a mother who's 88. She'll kill me. She may be 87. My father's 94. So, you know, I feel good about those genes.

‘But it's definitely a third act,’ he added. ‘And so you're a little more conscious of your time in how you choose to spend it.’

Douglas had been on tenterhooks waiting to see the results after completing his cancer treatment before Christmas.

He was pictured looking tired and frail in New York when he was in the middle of chemotherapy and friends and fans feared the worst when he revealed the disease had spread beyond the original tumour.

Fighter: Douglas and wife Catherine Zeta-Jones pictured today in New York

He blamed the illness on a lifetime of drinking and smoking. At one point, his father, screen icon Kirk Douglas, flew from his home in Los Angeles to spend time with his son in New York.

But last month, doctors told him his chances of a full recovery had increased to 80 per cent and he was pictured taking his 42-year-old wife and two young children, Dylan, ten, and seven-year-old Carys on trips to Disney World and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Florida.

The family also went on holiday to Hawaii to help with the veteran star’s recuperation.

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter before hearing the results, Douglas said he was determined to battle through the illness despite the uncertain prognosis.

‘It certainly has put a little perspective on mortality, obviously,’ he said.

‘But as I looked through the stats, I didn’t think of this as life and death, I just saw it as an illness to get over. So I didn’t dig into the bottom of my soul to see what I could see.’

Passion project: Katie Holmes says she 'loved' playing Jackie Kennedy in a TV series that has since been axed by the History Channel

Katie Holmes says she 'worked hard' to accurately portray Jackie Kennedy in a new TV miniseries, but it wasn't enough to prevent it from being dropped by the History Channel.

The eight part film, which stars Katie Holmes as the First Lady and Greg Kinnear as JFK, was set to air in the US later this year.

But it is unlikely to ever be shown in the U.S. after pressure from his surviving family members.

Maria Shriver and Caroline Kennedy are reported to have lobbied hard for the History Channel to pull the plug on the series.

In an interview with Elle magazine that took place before the show was axed, the former Dawson's Creek actress said she immersed herself in research, reading books and watching old footage of the former US First Lady.

Retail therapy: Katie Holmes hit the shops in Vancover with her daughter Suri yesterday after learning of the network's decision to scrap the project

'[Tom] watched everything with me,' Holmes says of her 48-year-old husband Tom Cruise. 'He found it fascinating.'

The mother-of-one reportedly tells Elle magazine that she spent her evenings practicing Kennedy's accent.

'I worked as hard as I could,' she says, 'because I loved her.

'On set there was this feeling that we had to create something very special, because these people were very special.'

In Elle, she spoke in depth about her fascination with the former First Lady who was at her husband's side when he was assassinated in November 1963.

'I loved her': In an interview that took place back in November for the latest issue of Elle magazine, Katie said she was fascinated by the First Lady

Holmes says she didn't realise that Kennedy's two-day-old son Patrick died in August, three months before her husband was shot to death.

That loss was in addition to a miscarriage she suffered in the first year of her marriage and the birth of a stillborn daughter in 1956.
She eventually had two healthy children - Caroline and John F Kennedy JR.
'I didn't realise that she had lost a child in August,' Holmes says, 'and then [Jack] was assassinated in November.

'I loved her': In an interview that took place back in November for the latest issue of Elle magazine, Katie said she was fascinated by the First Lady

'I couldn't believe it. She had so much strength... I loved her love of family, how important it was for her to be a good mother.'

Holmes also says: '[The Kennedys] were like movie stars. There was such a professionalism to their public image.'

At the weekend the History Channel made its shock announcement in an exclusive statement given to The Hollywood Reporter.

A spokesperson from the station told the entertainment bible: 'While the film is produced and acted with the highest quality, after viewing the final product in its totality we have concluded this dramatic interpretation is not a fit for the History brand...

The Kennedys is still scheduled to air on Canadian TV in March.

A man needs his me time: A stony-faced Simon Cowell leaves Mezghan Hussainy trailing in his wake

Perhaps a bicycle built for two was too much to hope for.

When Simon Cowell took Mezhgan Hussainy on a spin through St Barts, he preferred to go it alone.

If his bride-to-be had visions of snuggling up behind him riding pillion then she must have been disappointed.

The X Factor judge left Miss Hussainy, 37, trailing in his wake as they cruised around the streets on matching quad bikes.

Cowell, 51, flew out to the Caribbean last month for his annual winter break, accompanied by two ex-girlfriends, Sinitta and Jackie St Clair. Miss Hussainy, however, stayed behind in England.

She finally arrived at his £625,000-a-week super-yacht just before Christmas. But the cruise around Barbados, Grenada, Antigua and St Barts has not been easy sailing apparently.

Couple: Cowell got engaged to Miss Hussainy on Valentine's Day last year but they are yet to set a date for their wedding

There have been reports that Miss Hussainy has clashed with Cowell’s harem on board.
Cowell asked her to marry him on Valentine’s Day last year but they have yet to set a date for the wedding.

He has, however, agreed to allow Miss Hussainy, a make-up artist, to move into his West London mansion next month – 18 months after they first began dating.

Night at the ball game: Lindsay Lohan enjoys her view of the Los Angeles Lakers vs the New York Knicks alongside her jeweller friend Pascal Mouawad tonight

She has spent the last three months getting sober in a rehabilitation clinic.
So it's hardly surprising that Lindsay Lohan is taking the chance to enjoy a bit of the Los Angeles high life.

The 24-year-old actress indulged in a pampering session at a Beverly Hills salon today before taking coveted front row seats at the Los Angeles Lakers basketball game.

Hands in the air! A happy looking Lindsay cheers on the Lakers at the Staples Centre on Sunday

The star looked like she was enjoying herself at the match, which she attended with her friend, jeweller Pascal Mouawad.

At one point, she introduced Pascal to her director friend Spike Lee, who was also at the game where the Lakers took on the New York Knicks.

Earlier, she made sure she looked her best when she went for a pampering session seen at the Byron & Tracy Salon in Beverly Hills.

Pleased to meet you! Lindsay introduces her friend Pascal to legendary film director Spike Lee

The star looked happy and relaxed as she left the salon wearing rust coloured knee-high boots over skin tight jeans and a baggy white shirt.

Lindsay appears to have been in a good mood since leaving the Betty Ford Clinic last week.

She has been receiving treatment there since last September after she was ordered back for treatment by a judge after failing a drugs test.

The star's rehab stint was in connection with her 2007 DUI conviction, after she repeatedly failing to meet the terms of her probation.

But now, Lindsay seems intent on a new start and has moved into a new beach house next door to friend Samantha Ronson in the Venice area of Los Angeles.

Good spirits: Lindsay looked happy as she left the salon and got into her designer Range Rover

She has also been lent a rather flashy set of new wheels.

According to Radar Online, the star was lent a 2010 limited edition ONYX Range Rover to drive for an unspecified amount of time.

Lindsay was spotted driving the car, said to be worth $135,000, last week and tweeted her thanks to the Beverly Hills garage who lent her the car.

'Thanks @Trevkgimotors and Amber at Germanindependent.org for the ONYX range rover,' Lindsay posted on her Twitter account Thursday.
