Getting to grips with the issue: Vladimir Putin grabs an opponent and throws him over his shoulder

Gordon Brown earned a reputation for throwing his weight around during his bout as prime minister but he's got nothing on Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

The black belt politician took part in a televised judo sparring session to inaugurate a sports complex in his home town of St Petersburg.

But as he tossed opponents over his shoulder and slammed them into the canvas for the cameras, he was still not beyond a telling off from his teacher.

Happy landings: Is it an honour to be slammed to the canvas by your Prime Minister?

Anatoly Rakhlin, Putin's judo coach for 15 years, pulled the premier up on his technique.

'Move your hips forward,' barked Rakhlin as Putin tackled another opponent.

'I watched your technique today,' he told his charge later, 'your left hand needs more work.'

However, speaking to reporters after the sparring session Rakhlin was much kinder to the 58-year-old former KGB agent.

'Overall Vladimir Vladimirovich has an excellent technique,' he said.

'God grant that everyone his age was able to do the same thing.'

Limbering up: Putin likes to stretch himself to maintain an action man image

Putin also used the media opportunity to quiz his sports minister on the progress of another of his hobbies in its bid for Olympic recognition.

The Prime Minister also practises sambo, a martial art that is used in training for members of the Russian security forces, but Vitaly Mutko did not have good news for his leader.

'They are not letting us in,' Mutko told Putin.

'It's politics.'

Putin urged Mutko to push the bid harder, and when your boss is bare-chested under his judo uniform and has just defeated all-comers on the mats, it must be quite hard to say no.

The Russian leader prides himself on the image he has cultivated as an international man of action.

Next please: Putin straightens his belt to prepare for another opponent, who is happy to meet the premier

Some analysts believe that Putin is gearing up for another presidential campaign - the next elections are due in 2012 - to resume the mantle he held between 2000 and 2008.

The televised judo display is the latest in a series of stunts mounted in 2010 to gain exposure and further his action man image.

Already this year, he has fired darts from a crossbow at a whale from a dinghy in choppy waters, flown a fire-fighting jet above raging fire, tagged a polar bear on an Arctic expedition and completed a 10-day drive across Siberia.

Watching Putin in action, you'd have to think twice about standing against him.

Going home for Christmas: Nicole Kidman and husband Keith Urban lead their daughter Sunday Rose in Sydney International Airport earlier today

After spending the week in Australia, no doubt Nicole Kidman was anxious to get home to the U.S. in time to prepare for Christmas.

But the actress, husband Keith Urban and their daughter Sunday Rose found their plans disrupted today when their flight was grounded at Sydney airport.

The trio were sitting onboard a Qantas Boeing 747 awaiting takeoff at 3:10pm local time when engineers discovered an engine malfunction.

Back to Nashville: Kidman has spent the past week in Sydney with her family, where she filmed a segment for the Oprah Winfrey Show

After an anxious wait, all the passengers were asked to return to the terminal, where they remained for several hours.

However, Kidman and Urban declined to spend hours waiting in the terminal and decided to return to their home in the Sydney suburb of Lavender Bay.

Although their fellow passengers later boarded a separate plane at 7:30pm, the famous couple are expected to fly to Los Angeles on Christmas Eve.

A Qantas spokesman said: There was a vibration in one of the engines and the plane immediately rejected take-off, which is standard procedure in that situation.'

Ahead of their interrupted journey back home, the family were seen looking summery as they arrived at the airport.

Kidman, 43, looked festive in a stylish red maxi dress with a black blazer and flat sandals.

Busy 2011 ahead: After Christmas, Kidman will be hard at work promoting her new film Rabbit Hole

As she strolled into the airport, she held hands with her two-year-old daughter Sunday, who looked adorable in a multi-coloured dress sandals.

Once they eventually arrive in LA, the couple are expected to transfer to Nashville, Tennessee, where they live most of the year.

The couple spent a week Down Under so they could celebrate an early Christmas with Kidman's parents Anthony and Janelle, who live in Sydney.

During their trip, the couple filmed a segment for the Oprah Winfrey Show Australian TV special and Kidman visited sick youngsters at Sydney's Children's Hospital.

But after spending Christmas at their Nashville country home, Kidman will be on the publicity trail in the U.S. for her new film Rabbit Hole.

The film stars Kidman and Aaron Eckhart as a married couple, who lives change forever when their young son is killed in a car accident.

After premiering at the Toronto Film Festival in September, it is due for release in the U.S. next month and in the UK in February.

Old flames: Kelly Brook and Danny Cipriani before their split. The pair have reunited and are currently on holiday together in The Maldives

She has been spotted cuddling up to his former rugby teammate Thom Evans in recent weeks.

But it seems that there is no substitute for her ex- Danny Cipriani, as he and Kelly Brook have been reunited on a romantic island getaway.

The 31-year-old model was seen with her former boyfriend and England star in Dubai boarding a plane headed for the Maldives.

They landed in Male, the most populous city in the Island nation in the Indian Ocean, before making their way to a more remote island by private seaplane, a source told The Sun.

Sidelined: Brook cosied up to Cipriani's former teammate Thom Evans during her birthday celebrations in November

‘Kelly boarded a plane with Danny and a blonde female friend.

‘They were obviously looking forward to spending some Christmassy time together in the sun.

Touch rugby: Brook certainly looked comfortable with Evans

‘They were laughing and joking and seemed very happy.’

Their reunion may come as a surprise to many after Kelly was spotted celebrating her birthday with Thom, who played international rugby for Scotland.

They spend time sitting alone chatting and giggling away at the May Fair hotel in London in November.

The pair had split in June after less than two years together after Danny, 23, had decided to move to Australia to play rugby for the Melbourne Rebels.

Lunch for one: Zac Efron heads out in driving rain to pick up a sandwich in Los Angeles yesterday

After four years of romantic meals with his girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens, Zac Efron is now facing Christmas as a single man.

Yesterday the actor was seen popping into a sandwich shop alone yesterday, picking up a sub and packet of Cheetos for his solo lunch.

Dressed in a denim shirt and chinos, he looked less than impressed as he walked to his car through the driving rain.

Just last month Zac, 23, was spotted hugging and kissing his High School Musical co-star Vanessa as they sat in a car. But not soon after they announced their split.

With ex-girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens; the couple had been dating since they were teenagers

The couple started dating when they were only teenagers, after meeting on the set of the hit TV movie HSM, which made them household names.

However, it seems there is no third party involved and it was simply a sad case of growing apart.

'It's nothing dramatic,' a source told E! Online. 'There's no third party involved.'

Another source, close to the couple told Usmagazine.com: 'They are still talking and still friends. There's no drama. No one cheated. They just grew up.'

Vanessa talked about the relationship earlier this year, saying: 'Right off the bat, we had a connection.

'I think everybody could see it. When we had our audition, they paired us together. And he was adorable.

Missing Vanessa? Zac didn't look like he was enjoying bachelorhood

'I think that we inspire each other,' she added. '[I love] having someone to grow with.'

As she celebrated her 22nd birthday last week as a single woman, Vanessa said there were no hard feelings towards her ex.

'We're good,' she said.

Now Zac is looking to the future, and according to The Hollywod Reporter he is in talks to star alongside Sarah Jessica Parker in star-studded romantic comedy New Years Eve.

The film will follow a series of intertwined romances in a similar fashion to the movie Valentine's Day.

I'm just being Miley! Kelly Obsourne posted a picture of herself with So Undercover co-star Miley Cyrus on the film set

She's staunchly defended her So Undercover star Miley Cyrus since they started shooting together earlier this month.

But now it seems Kelly Osbourne's admiration for the teenager is growing daily, as she posted a picture of herself donning a brunette wig and impersonating the singer on the film set on Twitter today.

The 26-year-old star accompanied the picture with the caption 'I'm just being Miley!', copying Miley's signature peace sign with her hand and pouting for the camera.

So Undercover tells the story of a young private eye, played by Miley, who is hired by the FBI to go undercover in a sorority house for a job.

And, so far on set, Kelly appears to have been enjoying herself, tweeting almost constantly about her young co-star.

Earlier this week, Kelly came forward in defence of Miley after claims her parents disapproved of her new friendship.

She tweeted: 'Just read in the rags that apparently my mum thinks Miley is a bad influence on me it could not be father (sic) from the truth!

So Undercover: Kelly goes for a casual look during a break on set as she films the new movie

'Actually it's the other way around. Miley has us all on a health kick. Gym/early nights There (sic) really scraping the barrel on that one! This really makes me mad.

Miley is one of the most hard working respectful women I have ever worked with I am learning a lot from her!

'Miley and I have become really close. I'm sick of all the haters judging her she made one mistake and trust me she has learned her lesson!'

Getting into character: Miley seen arriving on set earlier this month

Meanwhile, Kelly also used her Twitter page this morning to complain about a computer hacker who had gained access to her email account.

A furious Kelly said she had already contacted police about the intrusion, tweeting: 'Someone has hacked my mail account the police are now involved who ever did this is in big HUGE trouble!!'

She later added: 'My account is now police reported stolen property if you try and sell any of my information you will be prosecuted even further.

'The ass that hacked my account had all my emails forwarded to his email address so I now know who it is I will find u & u will be arrested.'

Weighty issue: Allie Crandell models a black leather dress by BCBG on the Revolve website, but has been banned after readers complained she was too thin

The City star Allie Crandell has been banned from a popular American fashion retailer after readers complained about her skinny frame.

Revolve clothing featured Crandell on their online boutique looking painfully thin as she models a collection by BCBG Max Azria.

One image in particular showing her tiny waist and arms sparked outrage among shoppers.

Painfully thin: Allie has attracted attention in the past over her weight while she was on American show The City

One shopper wrote: 'As a normal, healthy woman with a healthy body type. How can I possibly imagine what this dress would look like on me when it is shown on an emaciated frame?'

Revolve have promised not to feature Crandell on their site until she puts on weight.

The spokesperson said: 'We are working closely with both the model and her agent to get her to a healthier size.

'She won't be appearing in any of our new product batches or in any of our fashion editorial photos moving forward until the issue is adequately addressed.

'We have been attempting to respect the privacy of the model in question while dealing with the issue on our end.'

In 2008, Crandell became a part of the MTV reality show The City.

In one episode, fashion publicist Kelly Cutrone accused her of being too thin before the model goes on to defend herself by insisting she eats healthily.

Although she played a major role in the first season, she has only appeared twice in the second half.

She also starred in Shayne Ward's 2006 No Promises video.

Crandell confirmed via her personal Twitter account that she will no longer be appearing on the show, stating, 'I'm done with the City forever.'

Birthday girl: Carol Vorderman is fabulous at 50

In her younger days she sometimes counted her imperfections. Today, as she turns 50, Carol Vorderman prefers to count her blessings.

And as her elegant red gown shows, she is a woman who has been very blessed indeed.

‘When you’re in your 20s and 30s you often think “I don’t like this bit, I don’t like that bit, I wish I could shave a few inches off here”,’ she said.

‘But when you’re older you’re just blooming grateful for what you’ve got!

‘For instance, I’ve learned that women spend lots of time worrying about cellulite but men just don’t see it, particularly as they get older themselves and their eyesight goes too!

‘At this age you don’t beat yourself up any more - what’s the point?

‘I’m comfortable in my skin, I’m really happy and that’s all that counts.’

The mother of two, who co-hosted Channel Four’s Countdown for 26 years, has been busy concentrating on figures other than her own since she left the show.

She is chairman of a Conservative Party Task Force that will report in the new year on improving maths education.

And she is running an online maths school for children up to age 12, www.themathsfactor.com, which operates with a team of 12 from Bristol.

Then there is the delight of family life in Somerset with her daughter Katie, 18, son Cameron, 13, and mother Jean, 82.

Christmas, coinciding with her birthday, is always a favourite time.

‘I was called Carol because I was born on Christmas Eve... no surprises there...and I just love this time of year,’ she said.

The year ahead, it seems, will be Carol’s year of living dangerously. She wants to use her 51st year to do 50 things she’s always dreamed of, such as learning to ski, completing a scuba diving course and getting her pilot’s licence.

‘I’m actually a real daredevil and I love engines, as I read engineering at Cambridge, so I want to learn to fly and go wing-walking and do some aerobatics,’ she said.

‘This will be an aviation year - I want to go ballooning in Switzerland and to see the final space shuttle go up.

‘There are all these things I’ve always wanted to do, but in the past the kids have been too young or I’ve been working too hard.

‘Now we can do all these things together and I have a lot more time.

‘Katie’s on her gap year before university so hopefully she can come with me to the States to learn to fly and I’ve got lots more things planned.

‘I was the kid on free school meals from a single parent family in the 60s who managed to get to Cambridge and have made the most of everything I could by working hard since then.

‘And as this year ends, I could burst with excitement. I know that a new chapter is beginning.’

Hard work, she often says, has been the key to her success. And it seems that also applies to her fabulous fiftysomething figure. ‘I do have to watch what I eat,’ she admitted.
