Fresh snowfalls to bring more misery to millions across Britain

Train companies' amended timetables cause transport chaos

London Underground to stage strike on Boxing Day

Traditional family walks to help the turkey go down could be off the cards this year as December 25 is set to be the coldest Christmas ever.

The mercury plummeted to -5.9C in Glenlivet, Scotland, in 1996, but the Met Office has now warned freezing conditions could see this record smashed today, with temperatures plunging as low as -12C.

And just as people will be thinking about heading home on Boxing Day, more snow will fall in the afternoon across England and Scotland bringing new misery to those who want to travel.

Weather forecasters say they are expecting 'heavy and prolonged snowfall' in some parts of the country, particularly from the Midlands up to southern and central parts of Scotland.

That will continue throughout Monday when it will head towards the South East and it will keep falling into Tuesday morning.

The bleak forecasts came as rail passengers making a getaway yesterday faced reduced services along with the prospect of a similarly miserable return tomorrow which promises a string of strikes.

Meanwhile, motorists had to contend with icy roads and air passengers were beset by more delays and cancellations.

A number of train companies ran amended timetables, with some services axed on the main London to Scotland routes up the east and west coast.

To add to the misery, union militants announced cynically-timed strikes designed to hit the post-Christmas high street sales. They involve London Underground workers demanding ‘triple time’ bonuses, Northern Rail, which serves the North East, and Arriva Trains Wales.

And as travellers endured yet another bitterly cold morning, weathermen said that should the icy weather continue, the UK could be heading for its coldest December since 1890.

Christmas Day may also see lower temperatures than ever before with lows of between -8C and -12C in parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland at around 8am.

Scotland is also one of the only places likely to see snow today, along with parts of north east England.

Met Office forecaster Rebekah Sherwin said : 'We are expecting another very cold day.
'The lowest daytime temperatures are going to be early in the morning, at about 7am or 8am.

'Tonight has the potential to be the coldest night of this winter so far and it is possible that tomorrow will be the coldest day.

British Airways was operating all its long-haul flights at Heathrow airport as well as the vast majority of short-haul services. Where possible, BA flew larger long-haul aircraft to European cities yesterday to increase its seat capacity. The airline was also hiring extra aircraft to help fly as many passengers as possible.

The airline said: 'In an attempt to free up even more seats, we are continuing to encourage customers who hold bookings to or from Heathrow up until the end of New Year's Eve to either rebook for a later date or claim a full refund if their journey is not essential.'

Away from Heathrow, other UK airports had to cancel some short-haul flights due to the continuing bad weather in Europe.

At Birmingham airport, flights to and from Brussels and Paris were affected, while Aberdeen and Edinburgh airports warned passengers to expect delays and cancellations.
Elsewhere, parts of Europe were also brought to a standstill by the wintry weather.

Christmas angel: Jennifer Love Hewitt spends Christmas Eve at the Los Angeles Mission with Mayor Anthony Villaraigosa

It looks like Jennifer Love Hewitt is full of Christmas spirit this year as she spends Christmas Eve at the Los Angeles Mission.

The actress helped Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa serve food to families in need at the Mission event.

And in her Santa hat and white shirt, the 31-year-old looked festive and pretty as she ladled out soup and turkey.

It's clear Christmas is Jennifer's favourite time of year.

The Ghost Whisperer star was spotted out and about in Los Angeles last week looking vibrant and happy, even posing for photographers as she headed out for Christmas shopping.

It's set to be a very romantic holiday season for Jennifer too as she prepares to spend Christmas with the man in her life, actor and director Alex Beh.

Sweet: A mother feeds her son at the Los Angeles Mission Christmas eve event

The couple have been dating since the summer after Jennifer broke up with her boyfriend of a year Jamie Kennedy in April.

And 28-year-old Alex couldn't be more thrilled with his new girlfriend.

'We hit it off right away and realized we have so many things in common,' he said.

'She loves to produce. I love to produce. Obviously, she loves to act...

'There are so many areas of the business where we both are on the same page. We’ve become best friends.'

And he is sure he and Jennifer would have a great working relationship.

He say: 'Absolutely. We’d have a blast. I’m sure there will be possibilities for that in the future.'

Jennifer recently finished filming for a TV movie The Lost Valentine, which comes out next year.

Sir yes sir! Zac Efron has cut off all his hair for his role as a soldier in new film The Lucky One

His floppy, carefully-styled 'do sparked off a million imitations and is almost more famous than he is.

But Zac Efron is sporting a very different look these days.

The 23-year-old shaved all his hair off for his role in new film The Lucky One, where he plays a U.S. Marine Sergeant.

But luckily for the actor (and his many fans), the loss of his famous hair doesn't detract from his good looks at all.

Posing with a fan for a Twitter picture, the 17 Again star looks more chiselled and handsome than ever with his new short haircut.

And he even challenged crew members on the set to cut their hair too, offering to donate an undisclosed amount of cash to local charity Kingsley House for each person who took the challenge.

Through the ages: Zac with floppy hair during his High School Musical days (left) and experimenting with a hair flick in 2009

Over 30 members of the crew took him up on his challenge, including two women who donated their hair to Locks of Love.

Zac's publicist Gina Hoffman says: 'He likes doing things for charity.

'Two Make-A-Wish kids came a visit to the set while he was there and he felt like he wanted to do something for a New Orleans charity since he had such a nice time shooting there.'

Not a fan? Zac kept his new 'do covered with a hat as he stepped out for a sandwich in LA on Wednesday

In The Lucky One, Zac plays U.S. Marine Sergeant Logan Thibault, a soldier who has survived three tours of duty in Iraq.

Thibault believes his good luck comes from a picture he carries of a woman whom he doesn't know, and seeks the woman out when he returns to the U.S.

The film is scheduled for release in 2011.

Back together: After her whistlestop tour to promote Burlesque, Christina Aguilera and son Max enjoy some last minute Christmas shopping at Barneys New York in Beverly Hills

For parents with young children, Christmas can be a magical time, with trips to visit Santa, school nativity plays and carol concerts.

But it looks like Christina Aguilera is not quite feeling the holiday spirit.

Reunited with her son Max after a whirlwind tour to promote her new movie Burlesque, she looked down in the dumps as they did some last minute shopping yesterday.

Dressed down in sweat pants, her bleached hair loose and untended, she visited Barneys New York in Los Angeles.

The 30-year-old is facing her first Christmas as a single mother after announcing her divorce from Jordan Bratman in November.

Since then she has begun a new relationship, dating Matthew Rutler, an assistant she met on the set of Burlesque.

Matthew accompanied Christina on the European press tour for the film and even celebrated her 30th birthday with her at the after party for the London première of the film this past Saturday.

New life: After filing for divorce from Max's father Jordan Bratman, Christina is now facing life as a single mum

Despite her glum face, Christina should feel lucky she was able to be with her son for Christmas.

With heavy snow and ice causing travel chaos at airports, her co-star Kristen Bell feared they would make it back from Europe.

In a post on her Twitter.com page over the weekend she wrote: 'Dear Europe, please let us go. We have been very good this year and we are very homesick. Love, us.'

What a difference: Katy in the video, and on TV show Home For The Holidays last night in America

She's the singer/sex kitten who is now known as Mrs Brand after marrying irreverent British comedian Russell earlier this year.

But never-before-seen home videos show Katy Perry in a very different light, as an innocent and naive young girl with a big voice performing in her hometown at a young age.

Katy, who was known then by the name Katy Hudson, is seen fresh-faced and with her natural blonde hair as she sings her heart out on stage.

Fresh-faced: Katy Perry is seen looking virtually unrecognisable in never-before-seen home videos of her as a youngster

The home videos are set to be shown during a television special on Katy to be aired on E! in America on December 29th.

Katy has spoken in the past about her religious upbringing and what it was like being raised by two Christian ministers.

Speaking about her mother and father, and the strict rules she had to abide to as a child, Katy said: 'My religious upbringing was comically strict - even the Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner was banned.

'In our house, no one was allowed to refer to devilled eggs. We had to call them angelic eggs.

Casual style: Katy wore a white top and jeans for her performance

'We were never allowed to swear. I’d get into trouble just for saying "Hell no". If you dropped a hammer on your toe in our house you had to say something like "Jiminy Christmas".

'The only music we were allowed to listen to was gospel. No wonder I rebelled!'
Meanwhile, Katy has revealed her and Russell's plans for their first Christmas together as newlyweds, saying that instead of giving each other presents, the couple have decided to focus on creating 'an experience' together.

Saucy: Katy's on-stage outfits are much more risque these days

She said: 'There will be me and Russ and a pink Christmas tree and a tofu-urky.

Honestly, we're not doing presents this year because we're going to do an experience instead.

'My whole life has been an experience, especially in these past few years and this year in particular.'

Family Christmas: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt pile their trolley high with Christmas shopping at a mall in Windhoek, Namibia

With six children eagerly awaiting the arrival of Santa Claus, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have a lot of wrapping to do.

And with their trolley piled high with toys and games, it seems the couple are planning on making it a very merry Christmas.

The Jolie-Pitts were pictured shopping alongside the busy crowds at a mall in Windhoek, Namibia.

Their daughter Shiloh was born in the seaside town of Swakopmund in the African country four years ago.

The well-travelled family spend every other Christmas in the U.S., then enjoy a trip to a far-flung location the second year.

Earlier this month Angelina explained: 'We're going to travel with the kids and go to a random part of the world,' she said.

'We're going to travel and have an adventure because that's what we love to do.'

Back for Christmas: Angelina gave birth to twins two years ago in the country at the seaside town of Swakopmund

But while the actress was fitting in some last minute gift buying yesterday, she isn't just relying on the local stores.

Asked whether she's kept on top of her Christmas shopping, she said: 'I have, and I've got it all boxed and ready to go.

'I'm trying to get every stocking right and all the wrapping paper and everything.'
Her planning is sure to delight Shiloh and siblings Maddox, eight, Pax, seven, Zahara, five and two-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.

The six have been spotted helping their mother pick out gifts in New York and France, and seem more excited by the day.

Shopping trip: X Factor star Rebecca Ferguson steps out in Liverpool yesterday to pick up some last-minute Christmas presents

She's had an action-packed few months, become a national sweetheart and coming second on The X Factor.

But, for the festive period at least, it's back to normality for Rebecca Ferguson, who was spotted doing some last-minute Christmas shopping in Liverpool yesterday.

The 24-year-old singer admitted she was looking forward to taking some time away from the spotlight to spend Christmas with her children Lillie, six, and four-year-old Karl.

Military chic: Rebecca looked chic in a navy and red coat, black tights and cute black suede

She said: 'It’s so nice to be home for Christmas. I feel like Becky again. We’ve got our tree up. I just wanted to get a few more treats for the kids.

'They’re really excited. I’m looking forward to Christmas with my family and my babies in Liverpool.'

The singer looked stunning in a military-style red and navy blue coat, teamed with black tights and cute suede boots for her shopping trip, and was mobbed by fans as she got out of her taxi ready to hit the stores.

Rebecca, who won the nation over with her down-to-earth attitude during her time on The X Factor, also admitted she was finding it strange not being part of the reality show.

She added to the Liverpool Echo: 'I’m going to miss everyone, especially One Direction and Matt, but I’ll see them all on the X Factor tour next year.

'Doing The X Factor was very emotional. I first auditioned in March so it’s almost been a full year for me.

'I want to thank everyone that voted for me and supported me. I want to tell them I’m so happy. It’s not the end!'
