Long awaited moment! The Oprah Winfrey Network launched yesterday after being delayed twice while its cost ballooned to a reported $189 million

The ratings are not huge, but Oprah Winfrey's new round-the-clock cable network seems to be a hit with the viewers who are tuning in.

After years of planning and months of hype, the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) launched yesterday across the U.S.

Buried in the middle of a holiday weekend, though airing on the numerically catchy date 1-1-11, OWN arrived free of glitz with a one-hour preview special hosted
by the talk show queen.

She offered a hearty overview of the live-your-best-life fare which she will curate across the network's schedule in the days ahead and further down the line.

'I wanted to take the ideals of great television that we've established on the Oprah show and bring them to you through a variety of new shows 24/7', Winfrey said.

Every minute of this network has been hand-selected by me for you, the viewers.'
Many viewers seem to like what they see.

'I watched a few of the OWN shows yesterday and was quite pleased with what I saw', GC from New Jersey wrote on the New York Times arts beat blog.

As for the professional reviewers, Matt Zoller Seitz of Salon.com said: 'We will gaze upon it with awe and affection, and marvel at the sweet magnificence of its founder.'

Oprah's introduction: The talk show queen introduces her new network

Caryn James of Indiewire.com wrote: 'Beneath the inspirational advice that often sounds like hot air... Oprah has a bedrock belief in reason, intelligence and education. That’s what makes her so valuable and OWN so promising.'

This spring, Winfrey ends her wildly successful weekday syndicated daytime TV talk show after 25 years.

But premièring Saturday night on OWN, "Behind the Scenes: The Oprah Show Final Season" is a 25-episode reality series that will give viewers an intimate look at the Oprah show as it draws to a close.

In her OWN preview special, Winfrey also touted Master Class as a series that will spotlight prominent people who include Diane Sawyer, Simon Cowell, Jay-Z and Condoleezza Rice.

Not only is Oprah the pinnacle of TV fame, she is also a formidable businesswoman, ranking last year as the highest-paid US celebrity with an income of $315m.

Sarah Ferguson stars in the six-part documentary Finding Sarah on OWN, which will follow her as she tries to bounce back from her cash-for-favours scandal

New project: Oprah looked happy and relaxed as she presented her show

But there are no guarantees that her mix of emotional empathy and homespun wisdom can sustain 24-hour, 365-day programming.

Executives at the channel say the goal is to exploit Winfrey’s popularity but it won’t be all Oprah, all the time.

‘What if I could take every hero who inspired me, every lesson that motivated me, every opportunity that was ever given to me and give it to you,’ says Oprah, who will be the OWN chairman.

There is little reason to think OWN, which is co-owned by Discovery Communications, will not succeed in the crowded cable TV field.

Her last start-up, the magazine ‘O’ sells 2.4m copies a month. In addition, she has a satellite radio company and 4.6m Twitter followers.

OWN initially will be available in more than 80 million homes.

Mate poaching: Perhaps the phenomenon is why Angelina Jolie could not resist Brad Pitt despite his being seemingly happily married

It is a worrying question which has crossed many a married woman’s mind: Does my best friend have a crush on my husband?

According to scientists, her concern could well be justified.
Studies show that when deciding if someone is attractive, we take our cue from others.

This, as some wives already know to their cost, makes a married man a better catch than a bachelor.

The phenomenon, known as ‘mate poaching’, might perhaps explain why Angelina Jolie could not resist Brad Pitt despite his being seemingly happily married to Jennifer Aniston.

In a round-up of research on the science of attraction, psychologist Anthony Little said female birds and fish find a male more attractive if they have already seen him in the company of another female.

Old flame: According to the survey, women find men who are attached more attractive - as Angelia may have found Brad, when she was with Jenifer Aniston

Allowing others to carry out the mating process speeds up the dating game.
And the phenomenon extends to the human world.

A study found that single women shown photographs of men set their sights on those who were said to be in a relationship.

By contrast, married women were much more interested in men said to be single.

Another study found that men were rated more desirable when they were pictured surrounded by women than when alone or with other men, the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B reports.

And on a girls’ night out, a single woman should make sure she stands next to a less attractive friend.

Studies show that if the company a girl keeps is on the plain side, it makes her seem all the more appealing.

Curvy: The hotel heiress chats to a reveller at the event and wore a white, sequinned minidress

And reassuring her friends she was not ignoring them, she explained: 'Friends - In case you texted me and I didn't answer, it's not cause I'm ignoring you. It's cause I lost my phone last night. So brutal. :('
However, when her younger sister Nicky, 27, turned up to the party, the socialite did manage to muster a smile.

Paris donned a short white dress with sequins, teamed with a Happy New Year feathered headband.

Meanwhile Nicky poured her figure into an asymmetrical black and white dress.

Twitter: She tweeted to say that she had a 'fun' but 'mellow' New Year and also complained that it 'sucks' not being able to text her friends after losing her phone

That's better: But she appeared to cheer up once her sister Nicky arrived with both of the siblings wearing matching Happy New Year feathered headbands

Perhaps Paris's legal battle with Hairtech International - a brand of extensions she was contracted to endorse - was also weighing heavy on her mind.

TMZ reports that Hairtech International recently adjusted its lawsuit to the amount of $70 million instead of the original $35 million in profit compensation.

The company claims that Paris did not live up to her end of the bargain in promoting and wearing the hair extensions, costing them millions in lost profit.

She allegedly even wore a different company’s hair extensions when she had agreed to promote Hairtech’s merchandise.

So close: Cheryl Cole and Derek Hough take a stroll along the beach in South Africa, where the couple have been celebrating New Year

Just last week, she denied that she was dating - but Cheryl Cole and Derek Hough apparently showed off their love with a public kiss as they celebrated the New Year in South Africa yesterday.

Dancing With The Stars professional Hough, 26, and the X Factor judge, 27, looked closer than ever as they walked along an idyllic beach near their villa in Cape Town after they had welcomed in the New Year at a house party.

Wearing a yellow satin asymmetrical dress at the bash, Cheryl had looked glowing and happy as she danced with Derek.

Hough has also reportedly bought the 27-year-old X Factor judge a £10,000 diamond bracelet as a love token.

The pair are staying in a luxury beachside villa in the Camps Bay resort a few miles outside Cape Town and saw in 2011 at a £1million house party apparently thrown by American property mogul Preston Haskell.

It was there, in front of the assembled revellers, that the couple sealed their love with a passionate kiss after toasting each other with champagne as the midnight chimes rang out.
