As the promo in the UK ends on the 7th October, does that mean I won't see them filter through until then?

It's a shame if it is.

Why do some end in September and others in October?

    http://www.apple.com/uk/backtoschool/?cid=WWW-EUUK-BTS20060801-8EBFY

"* Buy a qualifying Mac and an iPod from the online Apple Store or an Apple retail store purchase must be made between August 1st and October 7th and receive a mail-in rebate up to 100 (UK) / 160 (Ireland). Terms and Conditions apply. "

    I need one so soon!

The promo has nothing to do with new launches...they are completely independent and serve a public that is not interested nor in need of a cutting-edge notebook. The combo MB x iPod is wonderful for most, and it will be attractive even if the Merom notes are in the market.

    Merom:

    Twice the Battery life.
    Twice the L2 cache - 4MB
20% more calculations at same speed.
    Same price as Yonah.

Why not have these improvements ASAP? If you want to buy a Yonah Mac for less, just go to the refurb page. They are all there. If not, the one you want will come back soon. I monitor that page regularly and everything is in the refurb cycle now.

are you trying to tell me that with Merom a macbook will get 12 hours on the same battery?

maybe 20% better, but the real-world benchmarks show that 20% is not much at all, if anything.

i'm not saying i don't want Merom, but i just don't see the big thing that Apple needs to instantly put Merom in everything that it sells that use a mobile processor.

Except that Apple has typically released only the 15 inch model before later introducing the 17 (and 12 when they existed) when they do major updates. Witness the introduction of the Al case and the Intel switch. Of course it matters whether this is a major update. If, like the iMacs, there is not a major case redesign and it is just a processor bump then expect them to be released simultaneously. But if there is a change in case, I would be surprised (pleasantly though) if the 17 came out at the same time. You need to brush up on your Mac history.

Original Aluminum PowerBook G4 was only 17" for 8 long months (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powerbook_g4/stats/powerbook_g4_1.0_17.html) introduced January 7, 2003 at MacWorld Expo SF by Steve Jobs. It ran at 1GHz and had two USB 1.1 ports. :p

The first 15" PM G4 in an Aluminum case running @ 1GHz & 1.25GHz (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powerbook_g4/stats/powerbook_g4_1.25_15.html) with two USB 2 ports didn't appear until Paris Apple Expo September 16 also introduced by Steve Jobs in his Paris keynote that morning. At that same time the 17" lost the USB 1.1 ports and went USB 2 also as well as to a top speed of 1.33GHz (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powerbook_g4/stats/powerbook_g4_1.33_17.html). Only 3 short years ago today. ;)

So there is no predictable introduction order. But this time it MUST be the whole line because of the C2D leap. ;)

    http://images.macrumors.com/article/2011/03/30/183222-lion_dev_preview_2_500.jpg

Apple today pushed out a new developer preview version of Mac OS X Lion, offering an updated build of the company's next-generation operating system for testing purposes. The new version is Build 11A419.

Changes included in the update are currently unknown. We've also heard that Apple pushed out a minor update via Software Update to developers testing the initial Lion build, an update that will allow them to download updates through the Mac App Store.

It was reported (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/03/25/apple-already-nearing-golden-master-candidate-versions-of-mac-os-x-lion/) a few days ago that Apple is already nearing the release of "golden master candidate" versions to developers, despite a distinct lack of polish and even basic functionality in the initial version issued late last month. Consequently, developers will be looking closely at the new build for signs of progress.

Apple has stated that Mac OS X Lion will be released to the public this summer, and the operating system is of course expected to be one of the major topics of discussion at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference scheduled (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/03/28/wwdc-2011-set-for-june-6th-10th/) for June 6th-10th.

One more thing. I'm not sure you guys know how Samsung works or really know how Big Samsung is.

It is the world's largest private conglomerage by Revenue. Annual Revenue of over 170Billion.

Apple Inc. (2nd largest market cap, pretty massive company) Over 65B of sales.

Samsung is almost 3X bigger in terms of Sales.

My point being that Samung phones and Samsung component makers are pretty much two separate companies that consolidate together. I'd bet that Samung Components treats Samsung phones just like any other vendor.

Apple suing the phone arm of samsung probably has zero impact on the component piece. Different entities almost with different relationships etc.. Samsung definitely values the apple relationship. It's the phone arm that ripped off apple's design and funtionality.

What if free Antivirus software is designed to help identify security holes, and the best way to infect Mac's wide-scale?

It couldn't help do that. I mean they only need a single copy of OS X to do that, not millions.

I've always thought virii has to be engineered under contract by companies making the "solutions" to them, there are far too many virii out there on a daily basis, to such an extent that it has to be developed on a full-time basis with some corporate involvement somewhere.

There probably are targeted attacks from corporations and governments, but mostly it's organized crime. And no, it's not the people providing protection (except for fake antimalware products, which started becoming common a few years back).

unless there is money in making them..=]

There is. That's also why Windows is the primary target of general malware (though that doesn't help you if someone is targeting a specific company or person-they'll attack whatever it is you're running).

Sorry but any company that feeds fear and paranoia to sell or distribute their wares, needs to brought under check somehow.

It's not fear and paranoia. Security vulnerabilities are real, and found all the time. And of course when it comes to malware, you don't even need that, social engineering can get it on people's systems too.

I'm surprised it's taken this long, to be honest: I've thought for a long time that Samsung's phones in particular are pretty much a blatant rip-off of Apple's industrial design and user interface.
HTC have shown that they can produce an innovative and different interface with their Sense UI, but Samsung seem to just want to rip-off Apples look and feel

What, precisely, did Samsung blatantly "rip off" from Apple? The sliding hardware keyboard? The chunky black plastic form factor? The pry-off rear cover and removable battery? Was it the flash they were including with their cell phone cameras before Apple even introduced a phone? Perhaps the plastic buttons and the extra dedicated (wasted) interface "buttons" on the screen. Maybe the skinnable launcher and widget-enabled home screens?

I hope that was sarcasm, cause in any other context it just makes you look like an uneducated fanboy.

If anything, this just proves that Samsung is doing something right. I mean, let's face it, Apple is acting a lot like the Winklevoss twins at this point. Technically, they should sue every PC manufacturer on Earth for every ounce of silicon ever produced, because, after all, Apple did invent the personal computer.

Apparently it's all TomTom, I found another site that said they were supposed to receive their shipment on the 17th as well and that the supplier has yet to update them.
    http://www.provantage.com/tomtom-9uob-017-00~ATOMT043.htm

This all seems like a huge foul up for TomTom. First they promise to release this thing months ago, and it's still not widely available. Now there are talks of google releasing a free navigation app.

With Provantage, the total cost is $101.58 so it's probably worth just hanging out with my current order as its clearly a TomTom issue. I like, and know Provantage and they are a good company, but waiting is waiting. Also, keep in mind this car kit is a good addition even using the new Google app should it arrive someday soon.

    Here we go again...

Hint: Intel is your winner, AAPL. Understand that.

Edit: for you young'ins, this a panel of IBM G5 processors. Specifically designed for Apple. The processor partnership was supposed to be groundbreaking.

Soon after, Apple went begging to Intel and, well, what's the processor brand in the Mac you are reading this on?

I'm using an older PowerPC G4 and I'm proud of it :D

Another thought... if this rumor is true, wouldn't this be a great time to buy stock in ARM?

That all makes sense, but again, the plate is without vents. And even if they would go through the whole plate (which they don't), the PSU itself is still sealed, so no way to get hot air from the back of the PCIe section. If it gets any air from that section through the small holes that are in the plate that separate the sections, it gets cold air from the PCIe fan since the PSU's fan sits in front of the unit in close proximity to the PCIe fan. (wow, even I don't understand what I just wrote...).

Edit: This is a shot from my 2009 machine. As you can see, the plate doesn't have vents. This is the ODD bay but the part where the PSU sits looks the same.
From the other image, it appeared as if the vents did go through.

I'd expect some of the heated air from the PCIe section does make it in, but not much (i.e. up at the very front of the case, were it would mix with cool air that enters the front of the ODD bays).

Either way, there doesn't appear to be enough heat movement from one section to another to cause any problems. ;)

Didn't somebody already point out the family account bargain?

$149 for 5 accounts; only 30 bucks per account per year seems like a good deal for us. Even though our kids are grown they still like having it. And the 10GB storage on the sub-accounts is still big enough to be useful.

But I just got the email notice that mine/ours is just about to renew, too. To have it become free for new users in a week, or a month, even, would be somewhat of a bite . . .

I'd pay a premium for products manufactured in the US.

Products might be more expensive, but there would be more Americans employed. As much are there is a downside to producing here, there is also an upside.

Are you willing to pay significantly more?

Maybe not at WWDC, but I don't see them waiting till Fall to put out new iPhone hardware, hold iOS5 till then, maybe, but not new hardware.

They risk losing people to Android, WebOS, etc... as the remaining iPhone3GS people all start coming off of contract, and nobody will go iPhone4 knowing 5 is just months away.

This waiting around also gives 3GS users a few months to check out other products (new Pre w/WebOS, etc). Apple does not want people looking around during that break time.

I'm in that boat. although I'm most likely not willing to 'jump ship'. :) would just be disappointed at a few more months of an 'old phone'.

although the 8" from previous rumours may be a tad small

I've been looking for something that is more practical (read larger) than a Palm Pilot but smaller than a small (read 12 inch) notebook.

Essentially I'm looking for a larger PDA. One that I can use with a bluetooth keyboard. I don't need it to be a fully powered notebook and at around $3,000 UPCs are far too expensive.

Something around $300 to $700 canadian, taxes in would be about right. I also don't need it to be a phone. I like my RAZR.

    Just my $0.02 CAD.

But what do you do if you need to reinstall, say, after replacing your hard disk? Without Lion restore media, you'd be forced to install Snow Leopard, then upgrade to the latest with SU, then log into the app store, then (presumably) re-download Lion, then (presumably) apply any Lion updates.

Seems quite cumbersome, plus then there's a disconnect between the machine and the OS license - if I sell my mac, I can't include with it media for the OS that's actually installed on it.
