Go to any Apple website and check the published specs for iPhone 4/3Gs or iPad with 3Gs. Here's a link to help with that:

    http://www.apple.com/ca/channel/iphone/iphone-4/tour/specs.html

You will see that Apple does not just offer GPS, it offers "Assisted" GPS. Here we once again see Apple's zeal to optimize. The location cache that's causing all the fuss is what provides the "Assist". Some secret.

When you are moving about, your device notes and identifies cell towers that come in range. It gathers their identification, which initially does not include location. It then further queries a database to get the location info. The location is associated with that tower ID, and the two together are stored in the "notorious" cache.

When a device owner seeks to use GPS the program assists by instantly getting a preliminary location fix by accessing cell ID and location info in the cache. Without the cache, it would have to seek the cell tower location info first, so the existence of the cache speeds the finding of preliminary location info. That info is used to speed up the tracking and locking-on of the device to the GPS satellite.

So, the cache exists to enable a faster GPS lock.

    Sinister?

No, but maybe a bit sloppy, I don't know enough to be able to say for sure. Maybe Apple should only log and locate a tower once, which would limit the adding of current data. Maybe the file should always be encrypted.

I suspect we will find out, because legislators in the US and Europe have become involved and this trivial-seeming issue won't go away.

But, with regard to the Steve Jobs email, it does seem clear that Apple is collecting no information. Apple may once again be the victim of it's zeal to optimize features.

And again this, Assisted GPS does not mean it doesn't have a GPS AGAIN.

Assisted GPS means it has a GPS but is also Assisted by the cell towers to get a location faster. Most GPS devices use Assisted GPS for speed and accuracy anymore.

Hmm I get 288 learning the way I was taught while in school.

Although my math professor at UC IRVINE said Pemdas is wrong.

I dont think its going to be though the App Store. The only reason its thought he app store now is the minimise abuse.

Anyway, what happens if you whole hard drive dies?
What if you want to reinstall everything from scratch?
There is just too many what ifs

I think the should use USB flash drives rather then DVDs IF the flash drives are faster then the DVD

The app store is for apps and not for a whole OS

lol I take it you DO think they look very similar. I see that they both use icons in a grid format. So tell me, what exactly are you suggesting would give LG the grounds for any kind of lawsuit? Or is it just the icons and grid (the rest of which has been done with phone interfaces before)?

And if you still think LG would theoretically have a case, refer to babbit's post:

I am not suggesting that LG has any merits for such lawsuit at all. I am suggesting the opposite - that Apple does not have any merits either.

I think your right on the button with this one. iTMS is there to support apple products and as such they are going to want to keep it that way.
If its not an updated ipod the only other product must be some kind of video aiport media device that you can rig up to you TV
How many people wants to see a full lenght movie on an iPod? Why watch it on a 2.5'' when you can watch it on a 42''?
Apple needs to introduce a TiVo like box if they want the movie sales to take off.
First of all, this movie service will, just as in iTMS, not be very profitable for Apple.
Secondly, Apple would just be another movie provider if they just offer movies.
I doubt that is something Jobs could live with...

all things d posted some images from the lawsuit

    Great comparison images.

Anyone unwilling to admit the clear "clone" job here and validity of Apple's complaint is, IMO, one of two things; an Apple-hater or blind.

I find I am getting a hissing noise when hooked up using car speakers for playing music. It's a new cable and I have no idea if it's the car connection; the car kit; or the cable.

Hoping to get car kit for Xmas, but i'm not suprised by 'noise' coming through the 'line out' ... when a device cradle has antennae (GPS) / broadcast (bluetooth) electronics near by they can interfere. (my other experience with this is a portable XM radio w/ cradle holder - and could never get line out to not his, had to use fixed mount to car antennae for best transfer of sound).

Hopefully others are not having this problem, and you can exchange as defect.

Good luck, may be joining you in a couple weeks ...

New question ... since the phone is linked via bluetooth to the Car Kit, does the bluetooth engage even if you don't place the phone in the device? ... if it's still in pocket, does a call ring through the speaker of the Car Kit when in the car?

Right now there is a big price difference between the MB and MBP line but not a whole lot of difference in performance. Putting the Core 2 in the MBP would help differentiate it from the MB. That doesn't mean the MB won't get a speed bump (the Core Duo goes up to 2.33GHz), but Apple might delay putting Merom in the MB to differentiate the lines. I'd pounce on a Merom MB, but I don't think it's going to happen in conjunction with the Merom MBP.I think the Merom MB delay will only be until Intel can supply Apple with enough Meroms for the MacBook production line volume after the MacBook Pro line volume is satisfied. :)

Having passed through college or any math class doesn't prove anything, even that someone is working in a particular field doesn't necessarily make it an expert in the subject.

Math is a language we engineers, scientists, economists, etc... are fluent in.

To us this is not-ideal delivery method, but it has a definite meaning.

Looking at the thread, I think there is a clear dividing line. Native math speakers: scientists, engineers, programmers, etc... say 288. Others who are effectively non-native speakers may interpret 2 due to their lack of fluency.

    B

Just because Palm thinks it's that hard to make a phone doesn't necessarily mean that Apple would have had the same difficulties.

PEMDAS... First time ever that I hear of it.
I did no go to school in the US.

So.. if the priorities are Parenthesis, then Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition and lastly Substraction, using your rule:

    48/2(9+3)
First whatever is inside the Parenthesis: 9+3=12

    48/2(12)

    Then Exponent: none

    Then Multiplication: 2(12) = 24
    Then Division: 48/24 = 2

    There you go...PEMDAS fans.

No. That's not how it works. Once you get to multiplication/division, you go left to right. It's 288. And for those of you who get 2 by using calculators, any math teacher will tell you that calculators always get the rules of operations wrong. That's why we teach kids pemdas so they know what math to do first and they can use the calculators to help them do the parts of the equation they need help with.

    Precisely

The answer is 2, not 288 (it can't be that)

Following PEMDAS (Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction):

    9+3=12
    12*2=24
    48/24=2

    2 is the final answer.

As I stated above, you are missing an Important rule of pemdas. When you get to multiplication/division or addition/subtraction, you go left to right. So: 48/2 is 24. And 24 *12 is 288. If u don't believe me, just google pemdas and u get the rules:

    http://www.mathsisfun.com/operation-order-pemdas.html

Mac'nCheese: I think that in elementary school you first learn to multiply and then to divide. So first you multiply and then you divide.

That left to right rule is not following the order of the letters.
So for this case it is not PEMDAS but PEDMAS...

The Arabs give us the numbers that we use nowadays, and they do write from right to left.

So your math teacher is telling us that Mac OS X is giving us a wrong answer...You might need to watch waiting for Superman.

    MacnCheese is correct
PEMDAS is more like this. PEMDAS isn't really an accurate name, but it helps remember the basic order.
    1) Parenthesis
    2) Exponents
    3) Multiplication or division ... going from left to right
    4) addition or subtraction ... going from left to right.

    48/2(9+3)

    =48/2(12) or 48/2 * 12
    (by parenthesis)

    No exponents

    No addition or subtraction

    =24(12)
(by multiplication or division from left to right)

    =288
(by multiplication or division from left to right ... again)

288 is the answer. There is no way you can get 2 by following the order of operations.
And people should know better than putting a whole equation into a calculator and depending on that answer ... (spotlight, google, calculator)

I think there needs to be a bigger differentiation between the MB's and MBP's.

Well, just look at the history of PR, or the history of Microsoft, and you'll see this is a standard practice. Just do any search of this sort of thing, it's common.
